The active youth and children in Kanazogone parish in the diocese of Pathein in the Ayeyarwaddy Region of Myanmar served the elderly at St. Mother Teresa’s Home for the Elderly on September 2.
The assistant priest Father Vincent Aung Naing Tun who is in charge of youth and children in the parish said, “It has been for a long time that the elderly need assistance. No one helps them meaning no volunteer according to the responsible person of the Home.”
He continues by saying, “For this reason, I inform young people and children about it. Then, they are very interested and make themselves available. They are waiting for that opportunity to do for a long time already. When they have done this charitable work, not only they but also the elder are happy.”
“I am very glad to see their good deeds,” added Father Aung Naing Tun.
Fifty-three youth and children in number served the elderly who are 20 in the population.
Phyu Zin Hnin Thant, a girl among the active youth said, “We helped them by showering water upon them, washing their heads and bodies, cutting their finger and toenails, sweeping the floor of the home, cleaning their beds, and entertaining them with dance and singing.
She continues, “When youth and children go to them, they are very happy. When we cut their long toenails, they are very hard because it has been for a long time that no one does it for them.”
“When we give good care to them, they are very pleased.”
Phyu Zin said, “I served them with the sympathy that one day we, young people, will grow old like them.”
She suggests to other young people near and far that when they have free time, they should do a good charitable deed as she does.
As the activities of youth, they clean the cemetery and assist the elderly in the village once a week or a month.
St. Mother Teresa’s Home for the Elderly was established by Magdalena who is a villager on July 29, 2002.
