History: St. Joachim and Ann Church ( YE Nan Taung parish)
This parish has been opened in 1900. The chins scattered all along the Arakan yoma, some who has been baptized sent a deputation to Zaungdan to ask a priest. Fr. S. Guly who was then assistant to Fr. Bringaud, offered himself in Yenandaung in 1901. The extensive plot of land was soon covered religious and educational building. In 1908 Fr. Guily caught malaria and was forced to return to Europe to recover his health. Meanwhile it was decided to move the headquater of chin mission to Kyangin 16 miles away. In 1909 the buildings were shiled by Fr. Faisandier to Kyangin. He himself contracted jungle fever and finally secumed in March 1911. The Catholic population was at the time 866. Since that time the parish was vacant and it was place under the charge of Zaungdan until 1990, when it was reopened again by arrival of Fr. Alexis, under direction of Bishop Joseph. |
